Snoring is called stertor in the medical world. It has been defined as a noise created from the vibrations of the air as it is forced through a small opening in the back of an over occupied throat. The throat structures that are usually involved and are looked into when it comes to snoring are the uvula and soft palate. This annoying noise is commonly caused by an irregular airflow of a blocked air passageway and can also be caused by throat weakness, mispositioned jaw, fat deposits in the throat, the touching of the tissues in the top of airways causing vibration, side effects of relaxants such as alcohol, or any drugs intended to relax muscles in the throat and sleeping on someone's back causing the tongue to drop at the back of the mouth. If your spouse constantly irritates you by his snore, then of these reasons need to be singled out in order for you to properly correct it.

Snoring problems have been found out to be a symptom of several serious medical conditions. Snoring is said to be a symptom of a more complex condition called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that leads to one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breathing during one's sleep. This can occur from a few seconds to a few minutes and five to thirty more times in an hour and in a minimum of three times a week. This condition is said be the most common cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. Snoring can also be a serious medical risk leading to stroke. Excessive loudness creates a certain turbulence in carotid artery blood flow closest to the airway. Increase turbulence then causes irritation in the blood cells.
